Beginning this fall, we are offering to all students going into 7th grade through completed 11th grade the opportunity to participate in “Grow Groups” discipleship. So, what is discipleship?
Discipleship is an intentional process where two or more Christians grow in their relationship with God through learning more about Jesus, becoming more like Jesus, and living like Jesus.
Who is a disciple?
Anyone who professes to accept Jesus Christ as his or her personal Lord and Savior is a disciple of Christ. The question for Christians is not "Do I want to be a disciple?" but rather "Do I want to grow as a disciple or not?”
Discipleship is a lifestyle of putting Jesus first in all things (Mark 8:34-38), following Jesus' teachings (John 8:31-32), fruitfulness (John 15:5-8), love for other disciples (John 13:34-35), sharing the love of Jesus with others (Matthew 28:18-20), and investing in others. When a Christian attempts to live out this lifestyle, he or she is actively growing as a disciple of Jesus - he or she is experiencing discipleship.
Discipleship doesn’t last for a 4, 6, or 12 week period. Discipleship lasts for a lifetime.
However, we must invest in the lives of young people. Our goal is to help develop young people into mature disciples of Jesus Christ so they can invest in others. Therefore, what we are offering goes beyond Wednesday nights, beyond Sunday school, and beyond church worship services. In other words, we’re digging deeper and becoming more intentional in our personal relationship with God.
What does involvement mean for me?
Discipleship is not a theology course or extreme Bible study program. You will complete a session in a book and be meeting with a group of peers & an adult leader once per week. During that time, your group will review the session in the book that you have completed for that week, pray together, discuss what God is doing in your life, what God is teaching you, and growing with those in your group together.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Discipleship books are $10. To sign up, you will need to pay your $10 by Sunday, August 8. If you are writing a check, please make the check out to Harvest Baptist Church and write “student discipleship” in the memo.
We look forward to growing with you!
